To celebrate World Oceans Day, ASL teams from all over the world have been cleaning up their local beaches & waterways throughout the month of June. Last week, our Australia team (based in Sydney) took the ASL Clean-Up campaign to another level! Lucie Harris, Operations Director for the region, takes up the story...

"In order to contribute to ASL's Big Clean-Up campaign, our CRS Champion for ANZ, Ashley Hall, organised an amazing challenge for our team - kayaking across Sydney Harbour to pick up rubbish along the way".

"We set off before daybreak and were privileged to absorb the breath-taking views of the harbour at dawn. To say we all enjoyed it was an understatement, but to know what we were doing to help both the smaller and bigger picture for Sydney was humbling".

There was some nervous laughter in the group when they realised this was breakfast time for the local shark population, but they managed to pass through safely without disturbing any wildlife!

IMG_0846The initiative was organised by local business Sydney By Kayak, to help clean up the ocean waters around Sydney and fund the provision of Seabins around the Harbour, encouraging people to dispose of their waste in a responsible way. Their tour guides collect rubbish on every tour, often collecting several bucket-loads each day.

Lucie summed up the experience "It was wonderful to get out on the water and make a tangible difference to our community. We live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and to help keep it that way is such an honour. It was also a fantastic team-building activity, we're looking forward to organising the next trip already!"
