PRESS RELEASE

Pernod Ricard Global Travel Retail, a world leader in travel retail, has teamed up with ASL Global and sustainable marketing agency, Pie Factory, to develop a ground-breaking Lifecycle Analysis (LCA) Tool which reports scope 2 and 3 emissions data for Pernod Ricard GTR’s promotional products.

By combining their respective strengths, Pernod Ricard, ASL and Pie Factory have used the LCA calculator technology to create an award-winning sustainable trolley bag with a significantly reduced carbon footprint.

The data generated by ASL’s calculator was fed into Pernod’s own Lifecycle Analysis tool, to help create an improved product made from lightweight recycled material, with a reduction in environmental impact of 34%, saving over 19 tonnes of CO2 emissions on each order.

Pernod Ricard Travel Retail’s innovative LCA Tool has been recognised by the wider industry. In October, the initiative won the ‘People & Planet’ category in the prestigious Frontier Awards 2022.

Pernod Ricard GTR & ASL’s partnership began in 2018, with ASL being awarded an exclusive contract to develop and source luxury GWP items for Pernod’s 240 premium brands in travel retail outlets across 160 countries worldwide. Since then, the two businesses have built a strong collaboration focused on the rationalisation of Pernod’s product range and the creation of an online GWP catalogue. Pernod stakeholders access the catalogue via a bespoke portal which also provides their buying platform, product showcase and campaign management functionality.

Covid-19 had a catastrophic impact on the travel retail industry but rather than wind down its service delivery, at the height of the pandemic ASL’s dedicated Pernod team took the opportunity to review the catalogue range to identify opportunities for rationalisation and product design improvements.

Beth Barba, ASL's Account Director, explained "We felt a responsibility to help our client through this challenging time. It was the perfect opportunity to re-evaluate the whole suite of marketing goods and identify where we could improve efficiencies and reduce the environmental impact of these products. Utilising ASL’s own PLA calculator, we were able to identify opportunities to change the design and materials used resulting in a 35% overall reduction in the product’s CO2e footprint”.

Stuart Swanson, Pernod’s Procurement Category Manager, spoke about the collaboration “ASL’s team thought outside the box to help us take a fresh approach. The Trolley Bag is a signature product and this re-configured design significantly reduces both plastic content and unit cost. The lighter weight also delivered a 70% reduction in shipping costs and helps improve the overall emissions impact.”

Stuart Swanson also reflected on Pernod’s recent Awards success “The Frontier Awards celebrates the very best of the travel retail industry and we’re delighted this project has been singled out for recognition. We've set ambitious ESG targets and our LCA Calculator is helping us drive towards those goals. Pernod Ricard is committed to creating innovative products that continue to grow our market share and fulfil our sustainability commitments. Our collaboration with ASL is helping us to make those commitments a reality”.
