What is Energy Efficiency and why is it important?

Written by Viktoria Lamprinaki | Jan 21, 2020 1:31:16 PM

Simply put, energy efficiency is doing more with less, meaning getting as much useful power out of as little energy as possible, and not letting any go to waste. For example an old-style light bulb produced light, but wasted a lot of heat in the process. New energy-saving light bulbs create the same amount of light without creating wasted heat, and they use less energy in the first place.

We all have the power to save energy, money and the environment through everyday actions. Simple changes can make a big difference. Did you know*:
  • Laptops typically use 85% less electricity over the course of a year than desktop PCs.
  • TVs & computers still use 10-60% of power even when on ‘stand by’.
  • Turning the thermostat down just 1°C saves 8% in heating costs.
  • Air conditioning an office for one extra hour a day uses enough energy in a month to power a TV for over a year.

Being energy efficient as a business and individuals can help battle climate change and reduce human greenhouse gas emissions. If we all work towards the same goal, there is a higher chance of achieving it. Here are some ways for you to reduce your carbon footprint and bring down energy bills at the office and at home:

IN THE OFFICE AT HOME

Get an energy audit

Insulate your home

Use energy-efficient equipment

Watch your energy consumption

Reduce peak demand

Hang thick curtains & insulate doors

Program your thermostats

Use a water-saving shower head

Turn off lights when not in use

Upgrade your boiler

Use energy-efficient light bulbs

Unplug your charger

Take advantage of natural sunlight

Fit double glazing

Power down computers & office equipment at the end of the day

Consider solar panels

ASL’s One World

As part of our One World strategy, we want to reduce our energy consumption and have started by changing everyday habits. We make sure all electronic devices are switched off after use and that our thermostats are kept at a stable temperature. Furthermore, we aim to keep our all stakeholders informed about the various activities they can engage in, in order to reduce their own energy consumption.
